"Leah"

A Poem by Cory Courtright

There was a young girl from the town of Coquille,
Who went missing one day, it all seemed so unreal.
Full of life, full of joy, she was only fifteen,
My youngest of two, my princess, my queen.

We searched and we searched for days and for weeks,
So tired at times I just couldn't speak.
She was found nine weeks later, 'bout nine miles away,
Her life had been taken; "Homicidal Violence" they say.

Although I'm her mom, I don't know how she died,
If only her killer knew how much I've cried.
Her case is unsolved and I don't understand why,
Why dear Lord did she have to die?

She was good, she was nice, she was happy, she was kind,
Memories of her linger on in my mind.
I remember her laugh, I remember her smile,
and ran my fingers through her hair for a while.

I tickled her feet and she tickled mine,
We used hair combs and toothpicks and even some twine.
There was nothing her sister and I wanted more,
Than watch her play sports out on the floor.

We miss her, we love her, if only we could,
Tell her ourselves would be better than good.
Our lives have changed in so many ways,
I'm a Granny, she's an Aunt; Let's give God praise.

I miss her, I love her, can't take it it seems,
Not in everyday life - Not even in dreams.
She's in my thoughts, she's in my prayers, she's in my every day,
Will there be "Justice for Leah", will it end that way?
